Fictitious Business Names

If you’re selling goods or offering services without a formal entity, chances are you’re operating as a Sole Proprietor, and you might need a Fictitious Business Name, also called a “DBA“

When do I need a DBA?

If you’re a Sole Proprietor and you’re marketing your business as anything other than your full legal name, you need a DBA. For example, “John Smith Landscaping Services“ would not require a DBA, but “JS & Sons Landscaping“ would.

DBA’s are also used for Corporations and LLCs and the rule is the same. Unless you plan to operate under the exact name listed on your Articles, including “Inc.“ or “LLC“ then you need a DBA. A Fictitious Business Name allows you to create a unique identity for your business without the complexities of forming a new entity.

Where to Start

Step One:

Start by choosing a unique name that reflects your brand and check its availability with your local County Office. Remember, DBAs are only good for 5 years.

Step Two:

Then, we’ll prepare and file the necessary forms with the appropriate authority, pay the required fees, and, if required, publish a notice in a local newspaper.

Step Zero:

Relax. Timelines, newspapers, all these requirements, DBAs can be complex and the County Clerk can be strict. Our expert team will handle the paperwork, guide you through each step, and provide personalized support to ensure your new business name aligns with your goals.
